Bertran Youth Andelin was born in Richfield, Utah, and studied at the University of Utah before continuing his training in Los Angeles at the Chouinard and Otis art schools and at the University of Southern California. He spent much of his career as an art instructor at Ogden High School from 1925 to 1960, while maintaining an active painting practice. Andelin is best known for his landscapes and seascapes, many of which depict the varied terrain of Utah and the southern California coast.
In this winter scene, Andelin captures a quiet wooded landscape blanketed in snow, animated by warm light filtering through bare trees. His brushwork balances structure and spontaneity, with crisp linear accents defining branches against a luminous sky, while broader strokes describe the undulating snow and exposed earth beneath. The contrast between cool snow tones and the golden sky creates a sense of stillness and clarity, reflecting the artist’s sensitivity to seasonal light and atmosphere in the Intermountain West.
