John Hafen (Swiss-born/Utah, 1856–1910)
West Springville with View of Mt. Nebo, 1894
Oil on canvas
20 × 38 in.
Frame: 25 ½ x 43 ½ in.

Painted only two years after completing murals for the Salt Lake Temple, West Springville with View of Mt. Nebo reflects John Hafen’s mastery of luminous color and atmosphere. The painting depicts the quiet wetlands and cottonwoods of rural Utah beneath the distant silhouette of Mount Nebo. Hafen’s delicate handling of light, softened contours, and harmonious palette closely relate to the pastoral tones he employed in the Temple’s Garden Room murals, where landscape was used to evoke peace, order, and spiritual reflection. The shimmering water and golden foliage convey both the beauty and tranquility of the Utah landscape at the close of the nineteenth century.

Born in Switzerland, Hafen immigrated to Utah as a child and quickly emerged as one of the territory’s most gifted painters. In 1890, he was selected as part of the LDS Church’s first group of “art missionaries” and sent to study at the Académie Julian in Paris in preparation for work on the Salt Lake Temple murals. There he absorbed the techniques of French academic painting and contemporary impressionism, influences that remained visible throughout his career. Following his return to Utah, Hafen became known for landscapes, portraits, and religious works distinguished by refined color and emotional depth. Art patron Alice Merrill Horne later described him as “Utah’s greatest artist,” recognizing his pivotal role in elevating the cultural and artistic ambitions of the early American West.
