John Hafen, often called "Utah’s greatest artist," painted this peaceful view of the Wasatch Mountains in the soft light of early morning. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian under notable artists including Albert Rigolot, Jules Lefebvre, and Jean-Paul Laurens. As part of a group of Latter-day Saint “art missionaries,” Hafen brought European techniques back to Utah, where he became known for his landscapes and portraits.
Though he struggled financially for most of his life, Hafen remained deeply committed to his work. As William Conant Jr. said, “His driving force was faith in God and the surety that his calling in life was to paint.”
This small painting reflects Hafen’s love for the Utah landscape and his belief in the spiritual power of art.
