Grandson of Mormon leader Brigham Young, Mahonri Mackintosh Young (1877 - 1957) was born in Utah; but, made his name as a member of the Art Students League (New York) and the Academie Julien (Paris). His sculptures and paintings are heavily influenced by his friend and mentor, Robert Henri. They often capture the human figure as seen in city life (e.g. boxing, construction workers). His pair of statues, The Stone Mason & The Carpenter, are reminiscent of Rodin's large works, and, even in this size, seem monumental. The sculptures were cast posthumously from Young's original plasters.
