The Reading Lesson by Bernard Jean Corneille Pothast
Bernard Jean Corneille Pothast (Dutch, 1882-1966)
Bernard Pothast was born in Belgium and studied under Gabriel Ferrier at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He also studied under Jules Alby in Amsterdam at the School of Reichsakad. Pothast was a successful genre painter, with a fondness for depicting peasant families. He painted mothers caring for their children in rustic interiors illuminated by sunshine. His sentimental illustrations of peasant life were popular with wealthy urbanites who longed for the simplicity of rural life.
