Frederic Remington (American, 1861–1909)
The Bronco Buster, modeled 1895
Bronze with green-black patina, 22¾ in.
Roman Bronze Works, New York; No. 238

Frederic Remington’s The Bronco Buster remains one of the most recognizable sculptures of the American West. Modeled in 1895 from one of his earlier illustrations, this was Remington’s first foray into sculpture. Encouraged by sculptor Frederick Ruckstull and playwright Augustus Thomas, he created the piece in wax, later cast using the lost-wax method by Roman Bronze Works.

The sculpture’s powerful composition—of a cowboy wrestling a wild horse—broke from equestrian tradition and captivated critics. Remington solved a complex technical challenge by concealing structural support within the horse’s frame, achieving the illusion of midair suspension. Contemporary reviews hailed it as both a technical and artistic triumph.

Over 300 authorized casts were made, including one displayed currently in the Oval Office. The piece continues to symbolize American determination, frontier spirit, and rugged individualism.
