Edgar Keller (American, 1868–1932)
Sunset at Laguna, 1908
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower left: “Edgar Keller 1908”
24 × 36 in.

Evening light traces the adobe walls of Laguna Pueblo as the mission church of San José rises above a flock of sheep and a solitary figure. Keller builds the scene from muted earth colors, enlivened by narrow strokes of coral red and turquoise. Painted before New Mexico achieved statehood, the work presents the centuries-old church not as an isolated monument but as part of an inhabited landscape.

San José de Laguna was constructed around 1699–1701 and remains an active church and prominent landmark of the Kawaik, or Laguna Pueblo, community.

Keller was a California-born artist whose career bridged commercial illustration and fine art. Around the turn of the twentieth century, he created numerous illustrated sheet-music covers for New York publishers, particularly M. Witmark & Sons, while also working as a painter, etcher, and sculptor. His paintings encompassed landscapes, portraits, coastal views, and scenes of everyday life. In Sunset at Laguna, Keller’s background as an illustrator is evident in the strong architectural silhouette, simplified figures, and carefully placed accents of color, all softened by an atmospheric handling of evening light.
