John Martin was one of the most celebrated British painters of the 19th century, renowned for his vast, dramatic compositions inspired by biblical, historical, and apocalyptic themes. Largely self-taught, Martin rose from humble beginnings in Northumberland to achieve international fame, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy. His work is distinguished by sweeping landscapes, theatrical lighting, and a visionary imagination that influenced both fine art and later popular visual culture.

Strait and Narrow Way is among Martin’s most iconic moral allegories, illustrating Christ’s teaching from the Gospel of Matthew contrasting the difficult path to salvation with the broad road to destruction. The composition divides the world into two realms: at left, a dark and chaotic landscape of temptation, vice, and ruin; at right, a luminous ascent toward a heavenly city perched upon a distant mountain. A monumental bridge spans the divide, guiding the faithful along the arduous path, while multitudes are drawn toward the easier descent into darkness. Martin’s intricate detail and symbolic clarity transform the biblical passage into a vivid visual sermon, reflecting the era’s fascination with spiritual struggle and redemption.
