Black Forest (Germany)
Pair of Alpine Animal Table Lamps (Ibex and Chamois)
Late 19th–early 20th century

Carved wood, electrified
23 × 11 × 7 in. (height of figures, each)

This finely carved pair of table lamps depicts two iconic Alpine species: an ibex, recognizable by its massive, backward-curving horns, and a chamois, distinguished by its slimmer build and shorter, hooked horns. Both animals are shown standing alert atop rugged rocky outcrops, rendered with a high degree of naturalism characteristic of the Black Forest carving tradition.

Ibex and chamois were powerful symbols within Alpine culture, associated with agility, vigilance, and mastery of extreme terrain. Their frequent appearance in Black Forest sculpture reflects the late 19th-century fascination with mountain life, hunting culture, and the romantic idealization of the wilderness. The pairing of the two species—closely related yet distinct—creates a complementary visual and symbolic dialogue rooted in the high Alps.

Originally conceived as sculptural works, such carvings were often adapted for use as lamps in the early 20th century as electricity entered domestic interiors. This transformation reflects the period’s blending of folk art traditions with functional decorative arts, resulting in objects that are both expressive and utilitarian.

Together, the lamps exemplify the technical skill, observational accuracy, and enduring appeal of Black Forest craftsmanship, celebrating the Alpine landscape and its wildlife through richly carved form.
