The Villeroy & Boch ceramic company was founded in 1836 in Mettlach, Germany and is internationally known for their production of table wares.

The Munich Child (Münchner Kindl) depicted on this stein is a character created as the coat of arms for the city of Munich in the 13th century. The figure was originally conceived as a monk but evolved to become the hooded child seen here.
