Henry Lavender Adolphus Culmer was born in England and worked as an errand boy in a London print shop during his youth. In 1868, his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrated to the United States.

A largely self-taught artist, he attended the University of Utah (then the University of Deseret) in the 1870s, studying with painters Reuben Kirkham and Alfred Lambourne. He was also influenced by Thomas Moran. Known for his panoramic landscapes, he painted mountains, deserts, and iconic locations like Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, and the Teton and Wasatch Ranges. He was the first to depict Utah's natural bridges and explored Alaska's interiors. His works reflect a deep knowledge of nature and skill in capturing topographical details.

Beyond art, he was an associate editor for the Provo Enquirer, contributed to Western Galaxy Magazine, and ran a printing and publishing business. He also helped supply stone for major public buildings in Salt Lake City. His works are featured in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Utah State Capitol, the Utah Historical Society, and the Springville Museum of Art.
