Pedal Harp
J. C. Stumpff, London
Wood, gilt decoration, and metal, 66½ × 38 in.
This elegant English pedal harp was made by J. C. Stumpff of London, a prominent 19th-century maker known for his finely crafted string instruments. The harp features a fluted column, angel cariatyds circling the capital, carved and gilded details, and a painted soundboard. The “patent” design likely refers to improvements in the pedal mechanism, enhancing tuning speed and accuracy.
The instrument was restored at one point by J. George Morley, harp maker to the British royal family, whose South Kensington workshop was renowned for its high-quality repairs and restorations. Today, the harp stands as a decorative object, reflecting the craftsmanship and refinement of the English harp-making tradition.
