DeWitt Parshall (American, 1864–1956)
Grand Canyon, c. 1912
Oil on board
Signed lower right: “DeWitt Parshall”
31¾ × 33 in.

Trained in Dresden and Paris, Parshall became celebrated for his atmospheric landscapes. A Santa Fe Railway-sponsored journey around 1910 began his sustained engagement with the Grand Canyon. Here, he compresses its immense scale into overlapping terraces of rock, using pale ocher and rose against blue-violet shadows to evoke shifting light and distance. Painted while the canyon was still a national monument—before becoming a national park in 1919—the work reflects both Parshall’s fascination with the landscape and an era when artists and railroads introduced its grandeur to a national audience.
