In this spirited frontier scene, Maynard Dixon captures a moment of cautious welcome as a lone rider greets a crowd of onlookers. Executed in Dixon’s signature early style with expressive linework and contrasting values on toned paper, the work was created as an illustration for George Pattullo’s short story “For His Master,” published in Pearson’s Magazine, February 1910. The visual drama and sense of narrative immediacy reflect Dixon’s gift for storytelling through image—a talent that made him one of the most sought-after illustrators of early 20th-century western fiction.
