Hermann Herzog was a German-born landscape painter who emigrated to the United States and became closely associated with the Hudson River School and later Luminist traditions. A prolific traveler, Herzog explored the American West extensively, producing atmospheric landscapes that capture the varied terrain and dramatic light of regions still relatively unfamiliar to Eastern audiences. His work reflects both European academic training and a distinctly American fascination with wilderness and natural grandeur.

In Elk by Moonlight, Great Salt Lake, Herzog presents a nocturnal vision of the Western landscape, illuminated by the soft, silvery glow of the full moon. A herd of elk emerges in silhouette against the reflective surface of the lake, their forms partially obscured by shadow and distance. The composition emphasizes mood and atmosphere, with subtle gradations of light across sky, water, and land creating a sense of stillness and quiet majesty. Herzog’s handling of moonlight—diffused through drifting clouds and mirrored on the water—demonstrates his mastery of tonal painting and his ability to evoke the poetic solitude of the American frontier.
