LeConte Stewart (American, 1891–1990)
Ogden, Jackson & Canyon Rd, May 29, 1936
Pencil on paper
13 ½ × 10 in.
Framed: 22 × 19 in.

In this pencil drawing, LeConte Stewart depicts rustic log structures standing at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Canyon Road in Ogden, Utah. Executed on May 29, 1936, the sketch captures both the rough-hewn architecture and the surrounding brush with Stewart’s hallmark economy of line and clarity of form.

By the mid-1930s, Stewart was already recognized as one of Utah’s foremost artists. Soon to become chairman of the University of Utah’s Art Department (1938), he balanced his academic career with his dedication to fieldwork, sketching and painting directly from life across Utah’s towns, backroads, and farmlands. The period also coincided with his involvement in Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects, which encouraged artists to document the American landscape during the Great Depression.

This work, rooted in a specific Ogden intersection, demonstrates Stewart’s ability to turn an ordinary corner of Utah into a subject of enduring artistic and historical value.
