Oil on canvas
24 × 29 ½ in.
Frame: 31 ¾ x 36 ½ in.

LeConte Stewart grew up in rural Utah and trained at the University of Utah, the Art Students League of New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before returning west to pursue a lifelong devotion to painting the Utah landscape. Known for his insistence on painting directly from life, Stewart completed thousands of plein-air studies that captured the rugged beauty and stark realities of his home state.

Outside Green River presents the arid expanse of eastern Utah, identified by the jagged outline of the San Rafael Swell and the clumps of matted saltbrush scattered across the desert floor. Painted with Stewart’s characteristic clarity and restraint, the scene conveys both the vast emptiness and the quiet dignity of the region. Works like this reflect Stewart’s mission in the 1930s to portray Utah with candor rather than sentimentality, an approach that paralleled the hard truths of the Great Depression while also affirming the enduring spirit of the western landscape.

By this period, Stewart was serving as chairman of the University of Utah’s Art Department, shaping the future of art education in the region even as he continued to paint tirelessly in the open air. Today he is celebrated as one of the most prolific interpreters of the Intermountain West, his works treasured for their unembellished honesty and emotional depth.
