John Sergeant Noble (United Kingdom, 1848-1896)

John Sargent Noble was an artist known for his animal and sporting paintings. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools and studied under Edwin Landseer. From 1866 to 1895, he regularly exhibited his works at the Royal Academy in London, showcasing notable pieces like Otter Hounds (1876), Royal Captives (1888), and Trusty Friends (1890).

In addition to the Royal Academy, Noble also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Fine Art Society, and Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London. His work was also shown at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and Manchester City Gallery.

In 1872, Noble became a member of the Society of British Artists, where James Whistler was appointed President in 1886. During Whistler’s presidency, Noble served on the SBA Council in 1887.
