A Late Roman Stone Mosaic of a Lion Hunting Prey
Circa 4th-5th Century A.D.
Dimensions: 80 x 102 in. (203.2 x 259.1 cm)

This dynamic mosaic captures a lion in the act of hunting, showcasing its predatory grace and power. The lion’s fierce energy is juxtaposed with its prey, creating a vivid and dramatic scene. The composition not only highlights the animal’s strength but also reflects the Roman fascination with nature and the symbolic importance of the lion in conveying imperial might and dominance.

The surrounding geometric motifs and smaller animal figures, such as a bird at the bottom of the scene, add to the intricacy of the piece. These decorative elements were common in Roman mosaics and served to complement the central action while enhancing the overall design.

Originally part of a wealthy Roman residence, this mosaic would have adorned the floor of a villa, serving both as a decorative and symbolic work of art.
