Martha Hovenden was one of only a handful of highly-accomplished and recognized women artists working at the turn of the century, and the even rarer subset of women sculptors. She was accepted and studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and, later, became a regular exhibitor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, alongside Thomas Eakins and other American greats.

She is best known for her two, monumental limestone relief sculptures at the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge.

This portrait of The Adamson Children bears the foundry marks of the famed Roman Bronze Works of New York.
