Adrien Étienne Gaudez (French, 1845 - 1902) was a student of François Jouffroy at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris in 1862. Adrien Gaudez made his debut in the Paris Salon in 1864. He was a prisoner of war in Germany in 1870 in the town called Magdenburg. During this period he sculpted the monument to the French soldiers who died in captivity. The monument was raised in the city's cemetery.
This bronze was casted after Adrien Gaudez and titled, "In Gladio Virtus" or "Strength in the Sword". Signature and fabrication seal is located on base.
