Mahonri Mackintosh Young (American, 1877–1957)
1931

This bronze sculpture depicts Enzo Fiermonte (1901–1993), a professional boxer turned international film star. Known for his speed and charisma, Fiermonte had a celebrated career in the ring from 1925 to 1934, captivating audiences in both Europe and America. His fame later extended to cinema, where he appeared in over 100 films, including Quo Vadis (1951) and Ben Hur (1959).

Mahonri Mackintosh Young, the artist behind this dynamic piece, was a grandson of LDS Church leader Brigham Young and one of Utah's most acclaimed artists. Young studied at the Art Students League of New York and the prestigious Julian and Colarossi Académies in Paris. His work often celebrated the energy and resilience of working-class individuals and athletes. Among his most notable accomplishments was receiving the gold medal for sculpture at the 1932 Olympic Art Competition for his work The Knockdown.

The sculpture captures the strength and precision of a prizefighter, showcasing Young’s keen interest in portraying the drama and energy of the sport. It was commissioned by industrialist Reginald Newton and cast at the Roman Bronze Works in New York.
