Portrait of Sara Kohlhepp
Minerva Kohlhepp Teichert (Utah, 1888-1976)

Oil on canvas
72 x 36 in.
Minerva Kohlhepp Teichert’s artistry was nurtured by the unwavering support of her mother and sisters, who encouraged her throughout her time at the Art Students League in New York City. Their letters, praise, and financial assistance helped her pursue her education. Her younger sister, Sara, was especially generous, sending Minerva her extra earnings to support her studies. This portrait, commissioned by Sara, was the first Minerva completed after returning to Utah from New York. It is signed "Minerva Kohlhepp," as she had not yet married Herman Teichert at the time of its completion.
In this portrait, Sara Kohlhepp stands poised in a soft yellow gown adorned with green floral accents, evoking a sense of elegance and calm. Her subtle, graceful stance and serene expression are complemented by the dark, neutral background, which allows the delicate details of her dress and her gentle demeanor to take center stage. Minerva’s mastery of light and shadow is evident in the soft modeling of Sara's face and the fluidity of her pose, capturing both the inner and outer beauty of her subject.
