Made for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, celebrating the founding of America, this pedestal was made by the Italian sculptor Romanetti to display his work "Washington and his Hatchet," etched and gilded on the side of the pedestal. The whereabouts of the accompanying statue are unknown. Yet, the heavy carving of acanthus leaves, laurels, and stars make this pedestal a remarkable and beautiful work that stands alone.
