A museum-quality Spanish vargueño or cabinet on stand. When closed the upper portion features a detailed high-relief, multi-figural depiction of the Crucifixion and Lamentation of Jesus Christ. The lower portion has four large panels, each carved with one Evangelist, authors of the Gospels (i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). The top opens downward, forming a writing surface that rests on two extending support bars, with ends carved with lion heads.
The interior is lushly decorated with fourteen Limoges (copper-enameled) panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ on drawer-fronts. The Limoges panels were created in Limoges contemporaneously to the cabinet, which was carved of walnut in Spain.
It retains its original iron strapwork, hinges, pulls, and locks.
