Mahonri M. Young (American, 1877–1957)
The Stone Mason and The Carpenter
Bronze, cast posthumously
Each: 18 x 10 x 14.5 in
In this striking sculptural pair, Mahonri M. Young pays tribute to the dignity of manual labor. With chisel, hammer, and saw in hand, the stone mason and carpenter are captured in moments of intense, focused effort. Despite their modest scale, the bronzes convey a monumental presence, echoing the influence of Rodin and the humanist realism of Young’s mentor, Robert Henri.
A grandson of Brigham Young, Mahonri trained at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris. He became known for his portrayals of everyday laborers, boxers, and city life—subjects he rendered with empathy and expressive vigor. These two figures exemplify his lifelong commitment to honoring the working class in American art.
