Joseph Horlor (British, 1809-1897)

Born in Bath in 1809, Joseph Horlor distinguished himself as a talented landscape painter, specializing in captivating depictions of Welsh landscapes and coastal vistas. By 1871, he had established his family in Bristol. His union with Elizabeth Sandys in 1830 brought forth four children, with both of his daughters pursuing their own artistic paths. Emma became known for her enchanting animal paintings, while Alice found her niche in crafting exquisite figures.

Joseph Horlor's artistic journey came to a close in 1887. Throughout his career, he exhibited his creations with distinction, showcasing 13 paintings at the British Institution and 11 at Suffolk Street (later known as the Royal Society of British Artists) between 1834 and 1866. His artistic legacy lives on in various esteemed collections. Notably, eight of his paintings can be found in the National Collection, while Bristol Museum houses three more. Additionally, two grace the walls of National Trust properties, and one is on display at the Shipley Art Gallery. His work is also proudly displayed in the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath and the Holbourne Museum.
