The Christ Child holds in his hands a Fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil, representing the Fall of Adam and Eve, and the future role that Jesus would play in redeeming mankind. The painter, Léon Comerre, was among the most celebrated and decorated of his era, winning the Prix de Rome, and painting murals for cathedrals and the Panthéon.
