Heaven and Earth is one of two pieces that I have created depicting angels. One of my inspirations for creating this piece was a verse from Isaiah, 40:31:
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
To me these are such a visually moving words, and they affect me deeply. For me the depiction of angelic figures with wings, or winged figures in general, symbolizes a connection to the divine.
Heaven and Earth is a symbolic piece that speaks to the connection that exists between the physical and spiritual world, and that the evidence of the divine is ever present in our lives. If we allow ourselves to feel and to be moved by things of a spiritual nature, they can become very much real and tangible.
On this piece the figure has one leaf tied to her waist and two leaves at the base of the statue near her foot. This symbolizes the connection between the spiritual and the physical, and that even though she represents a spiritual being, she has a piece of the physical world that she carries with her.
