After Adrien Étienne Gaudez (French, 1845–1902)
In Gladio Virtus (“Strength in the Sword”)
Bronze
27 x 10 in.
Adrien Étienne Gaudez studied under François Jouffroy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and debuted at the Salon in 1864. Captured during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, he sculpted a monument in Magdeburg, Germany, to honor French soldiers who died in captivity. His works often reflect themes of sacrifice, valor, and allegory.
This bronze, bearing Gaudez’s title In Gladio Virtus (“Strength in the Sword”), reflects his dramatic style and symbolic focus on martial strength as a source of moral virtue. Cast after his original model, it continues the artist’s legacy of combining narrative intensity with sculptural refinement.
