John Boylston Fairbanks (Utah, 1855-1944) John B. Fairbanks, born in Payson, Utah, in 1855, developed a passion for art from a young age. His interest blossomed when he encountered the works of artist John Hafen, shifting his focus from baseball to art. Hafen became J. B.'s mentor and friend and remained so for the rest of his life. J. B. worked for several years, often in conjunction with Hafen, painting landscapes of Utah and drawing portraits of such notable state figures as George Q. Cannon and Heber J. Grant. In 1890, he joined a pivotal Utah art initiative, studying in Paris alongside Hafen, Edwin Evans, and Lorus Pratt. Under the sponsorship of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they studied in Paris at the Académie Julian in preparation for painting murals at the nearly completed Salt Lake Temple.
