FERDINAND PETTRICH (GERMAN, 1798–1872)
Bust of Christ, c. 1850
Marble
25 x 13-½ x 12-½ in.

This serene and introspective bust of Christ reflects a blend of Neoclassical form and devotional sensitivity. Rendered in fine white marble, Christ is portrayed with elongated features, gently flowing hair, and a composed, symmetrical expression. The stylized drapery fanned across His chest adds a sculptural rhythm, emphasizing the spiritual dignity of the subject.

The artist, Ferdinand Pettrich, was born in Dresden and trained under his father, court sculptor Franz Pettrich, before studying with Neoclassical master Bertel Thorvaldsen in Rome. He later emigrated to the United States, where he received commissions from prominent political and religious figures. Among his notable works are The Dying Tecumseh (Smithsonian American Art Museum), Washington Resigning His Commission (U.S. Capitol), and various ecclesiastical sculptures. Pettrich’s art bridges European academic traditions with American subjects.

Provenance: Martin Cohen, noted dealer and connoisseur, whose influential Madison Avenue gallery and private collection supplied major institutions including the Getty, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
