Singing Boys (after Cantoria by Della Robbia)
Italian, 20th century
Possibly by or after Romeo Pazzini (Italian, 1855–1942)
Painted faience
Each: 25 x 17.5 in.

These vibrant glazed terracotta friezes, inspired by Luca della Robbia’s celebrated Cantoria (1431–38) for Florence Cathedral, depict groups of youthful choristers in spirited harmony. Originally conceived for a choir loft, della Robbia’s reliefs are renowned for their joyful realism and innovative use of glazed terracotta. These 20th-century interpretations preserve the dynamism and grace of the original Renaissance panels, capturing musical expression in sculptural form.

The crisp white glaze and sculptural clarity suggest the hand of Romeo Pazzini or his followers, who were known for reviving della Robbia’s techniques in the early 20th century. Whether created for architectural adornment or as decorative homage, these panels reflect an enduring reverence for Italy’s artistic legacy and the universal language of music.
