The Villeroy & Boch ceramic company was founded in 1836 in Mettlach, Germany and is internationally known for their production of table wares.
Depicted on the lid is the Heidelberg Tun, a large wine barrel built in 1751 with a capacity of over 220,000 litres.
The text, from an 1853 poem by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, reads:
“Alt Heidelberg du feine, du Stadt an Ehren reich,
am Neckar und am Rhein, keine andre kommt dir gleich.”
(Old Heidelberg you fine city, rich in honors,
on the Neckar and Rhine, no other can equal you.)
