I Am the Light of the World (Christ Appears to the Nephites) by Casey Childs
March — I Am the Light of the World (Christ Appears to the Nephites)
Scripture: 3 Nephi 11:10–11
In what is arguably the most visually arresting scene in the series, artist Casey Childs captures the climax of a centuries-old prophecy: the risen Christ descending from heaven to the people of the ancient Americas. The light is not metaphorical—it is literal, cascading from the break in the clouds in a single, focused column. At the base of the composition, figures shield their eyes or raise their arms, caught between disbelief and reverence.
The setting—stone ruins, tropical vegetation, a pyramidal temple—grounds the scene in a distinctly Mesoamerican landscape, offering a visual counterpoint to the familiar settings of Jerusalem or Galilee. Here, the viewer is reminded that sacred history, as understood by Latter-day Saints, unfolded not only in the Old World, but also in the New.
There is movement in every part of the painting—outstretched arms, leaning bodies, even the shift in the sky. But the effect is not chaos. It’s convergence. All eyes, all energy, are drawn toward the figure at the center of the light. In this moment, the divine enters history not as idea, but as reality—visible, physical, unmistakable.
