LeConte Stewart (American, 1891–1990)
Autumn Fields
Oil on board
6 x 8 in.
This small plein air study captures Stewart’s hallmark approach to the Utah landscape: direct observation, expressive brushwork, and an emphasis on light and season. The autumnal scene shows stands of trees in muted golds and rusts set against the deep tones of a mountain backdrop, with a team of horses at work in the fields below.
Stewart, a lifelong Utahn and graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, was one of the foremost interpreters of the American West. By the 1930s, his reputation as both painter and teacher was firmly established, and he became known for his ability to convey the dignity and labor of rural life in works both large and small.
