LeConte Stewart (American, 1891–1990)
Barn at Sand Creek, April 30, 1930
Graphite on paper
8 ½ x 11 in.

This drawing records a simple barn at Sand Creek, its weathered boards framed by dense trees. Executed in 1930, it reveals Stewart’s gift for capturing structure and atmosphere with economy of line. His sketches, often made outdoors, served both as finished works and as studies for later oils and pastels.

LeConte Stewart, born in Glenwood, Utah, trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before returning to his home state, where he became one of its foremost interpreters of rural life. As chair of the University of Utah art department for over two decades, he influenced generations of artists while producing an extensive body of work that celebrated Utah’s vernacular landscapes and architecture.
