Autumn, Liberty, Utah
Oil on board

LeConte Stewart’s Autumn, Liberty, Utah captures the quiet rhythm of rural life in northern Utah. A simple farmhouse and road lead the eye toward the foothills, framed by brilliant stands of yellowing cottonwoods that mark the season’s change. Painted with his characteristic clarity and restraint, the work demonstrates Stewart’s ability to distill a familiar scene into a composition of calm balance and lasting resonance.

A native of Glenwood, Utah, Stewart became one of the state’s most celebrated painters, known for portraying both its natural grandeur and its humble towns and farms. By the 1930s he was chairman of the University of Utah’s Art Department and a central figure in Utah’s artistic life, yet he continued to work directly from nature, painting en plein air in communities such as Liberty, where he preserved the essence of place with economy and sensitivity.
