Polydor Comein, sometimes spelled Comeyn, was born in the picturesque town of Ypres, Belgium, in 1848. His innate talent for sculpting became evident early in his life, prompting him to enroll in classes at the Ypres drawing school. Later, in 1865, he continued his artistic education at the prestigious Brussels Academy, where he honed his skills under the guidance of esteemed mentors.

In 1872, Polydor embarked on a transformative journey to Italy alongside his close friend and fellow artist, Edouard Lefever. This sojourn proved instrumental in shaping his artistic vision and technique.

A member of the esteemed "L'Essor" circle in Brussels, Polydor Comeyn's talent soon garnered widespread recognition. He exhibited his works at prominent venues such as the Berliner Akademie in 1886, the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878, where he was awarded a medal, and Buenos Aires in 1887.

Throughout his career, Polydor's portfolio boasted an impressive array of creations, including decorative works for the market halls of Ypres, genre scenes, and a multitude of busts, statuettes, and statues. His works found their way into prestigious collections, with notable pieces housed in the museums of Ghent and Ypres.

Polydor Comeyn's legacy extends beyond the confines of museums and galleries, as several of his sculptures adorn public spaces. Notable among these are his profession statuettes, "Les Merciers" and "Les Graissiers," located in the charming square du Petit Sablon in Brussels. Additionally, his masterpiece "Arquebusier" stands proudly in the town hall of Brussels, while "Justice" graces the Maison du Renard on the iconic Grand-Place.

Polydor Comeyn's contributions to Belgian sculpture remain indelible, his works serving as enduring testaments to his artistic prowess and unwavering dedication to his craft.
