Perhaps the only painter to win an Academy Award, Emil Kosa Jr. (French, 1903-1968) was born in Paris, where his father was the chief assistant to Alphonse Mucha. Kosa Jr. settled in America where he established himself as a matte and special-effects artist at Fox studios, where he designed the "20th century fox" logo still used today. As an art Director, he won an Oscar for his work on the film Cleopatra (1963). Kosa travelled widely throughout the Western United States.
