French Chinoiserie Desk after Gabriel Viardot (1830—1906)

A carved walnut desk inspired by Asian forms for which Parisian cabinetmaker Gabriel Viardot (1830 - 1906) was renowned in the late nineteenth century. The desktop has up-curved and down-curved ends and is fitted with a leather pad, above an apron with a single drawer and delicate fretwork and an asymmetric set of four stacked drawers with fronts decorated with carved designs and mother-of-pearl inlay. Straight legs with fretwork brackets connect to a sold shelf, and the entire piece is raised on carved square feet. Measures: 31 x 39 ½ x 22 inches.
