A sculptor of public and private monuments, Jean Gautherin (1840 - 1890) was born in rural Burgundy. In this silvered bronze statue can be seen all of the skill Gautherin had developed in monumental public works; but, here the artist imbues the humble peasant with the confidence and stride of a Greek Goddess. This trophy, commissioned by the French Ministry of Agriculture & Commerce, was modeled by Gautherin and made by the prestigious silversmith Christofle.
