Red Deer Antlers Mounted on Gilt Stag Head

The nineteenth-century rack of a mature Corsican red deer surmounts this gilt head of a buck, chewing a ginkgo leaf. Seventeenth-century Europeans adopted this motif, symbolizing hope and longevity, taken from Japanese ceramics. The head measures 28" x 24" x 15".
