These handsome portraits are of a prominent of Newport, Rhode Island family, Dr. John Preston Mann (1756 - 1837) and his second wife, Ann Scott (1764 - 1841), whom Mann married after the death of his first wife Mehetable Clark (1766 - 1803). After graduating from Rhode Island College, and then Brown University in 1776, Mann relocated to Newport, and though a learned medical practitioner, he did not open a medical practice. The reverse John Mann's portrait is labeled: "John Preston Mann, M.D., of Newport R.I.", while the reverse of Ann Mann's portrait reads: "Annie Scott, wife of Dr. J.P. Mann.
