Pair of 19th Century Black Forest Carved Wood Bird Table Lamps
A pair of elaborately carved wood table lamps in the Black Forest style popular in the late nineteenth century. In front of tall stalks of grasses, pairs of birds are perched upon a small bushel of persimmons and foliage that sits within a woven basket on a natural ground, and all raised on a carved tree root base. The lamps are topped with rawhide shades with gold-plated finials. The deep carving, accurate detailing and composition lend to the highly realistic and sculptural elements of the lamps. The Black Forest style did not originate in the Black Forest area of Germany, as the name would suggest, but in Brienz, Switzerland. Traditional carvings have been crafted there since the early 19th century, usually from walnut and linden wood. The lamps have been newly wired and measure: 18 x 8 ¼ in.
