Delicately painted floral and vine pattern in deep cobalt blue on the ornately shaped bodies of this wash bowl and pitcher set, the under glaze flow blue enhanced by the embossed details of the porcelain, circa 1900.

The base of the bowl is marked Manhattan Royal Semi-Porcelain Johnson Bros England, 6C. The base of the pitcher is marked Manhattan Royal Semi-Porcelain Johnson Bros England, C, with an accompanying sticker indicating it was part of the collection of President Roosevelt: No. 822 Collection of President & Mrs Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Flow blue originated in the early-nineteenth century among the Staffordshire potters of England. The name is derived from the blue glaze that blurred or "flowed" during the firing process. From 1890 onward, flow blue was commonly produced on a thin earthenware medium referred to as semi-porcelain. The basing does a have a 4 inch hairline crack in it.
