Léon Augustin Lhermitte (French, 1844-1925) was among the most admired and successful artists of the nineteenth century, with perennial prizes in the Paris Salon, monumental commissions, and a significant career as a widely-distributed illustrator. In a letter to his brother, Theo, Vincent van Gogh wrote: "If every month Le Monde Illustré published one of his compositions ... it would be a great pleasure for me to be able to follow it. It is certain that for years I have not seen anything as beautiful as this scene by Lhermitte ... I am too preoccupied by Lhermitte this evening to be able to talk of other things." This work, depicting three generations of a a rural French family, is typical in palette and execution of Lhermitte at the height of his powers.

Acquired from a private collection in Lyon.
