l'Automne (c. 1885) by Emile Villa

$77,500.00

With romantic undertones, "Autumn" depicts a young woman with a pensive look standing on the steps of a neo-Gothic building. A highly detailed painting, her dress is very finely embroidered with gold thread and evokes the fashion of the Renaissance, a revival in the 19th century. A late evening light slips gently through the remaining vegetation, this painting evoking the melancholy that only the evenings of this season make to the romantics. Signed lower right, "E. Villa".

French artist Louis Emile Villa (1836-1900) was portraitist painter known for his genre paintings. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, alongside contemporary Frédéric Bazille. Throughout the 1880s, Villa regularly painted scenes featuring Renaissance characters, such as "Autumn", which hung at the Salon of 1885. Villa exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1861 through 1894.
