A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Ryan Brown attended Brigham Young University, before furthering his art education at the Florence Academy of Art, where he was immersed in teachings of the academic and naturalist traditions favoured in the nineteenth century. After returning to Utah, Brown began teaching academic principles at BYU, teaching figure drawing, observational and spatial drawing and cast drawing to students, which lead to him establishing the Classical Drawing Academy in Springville, Utah. In 2007 Brown moved back to Florence in order to finish his studies at the Florence Academy of Art.
Brown is currently living and working again in Utah and has established the Center for Academic Study and Naturalist Painting (CAS). Brown has earned numerous awards throughout his artistic career, notably he was the top award winner of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey scholarship in 2004, he won Fourth Place in the Art Renewal Center Scholarship Competition of 2007, and won the Best Painting of the Year at the Florence Academy of Art in 2008.
