A woman of influence and status, gold and emerald jewelry is affixed in her elaborately styled hair, her green velvet and gold silk dress trimmed in lace and detailed with golden broaches, she sits with a red lacquered box on her lap, that held beautifully detailed fabrics she so admires.
French artist Louis Emile Villa (1836-1900) was portraitist painter known for his genre paintings. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, alongside contemporary Frédéric Bazille. Villa exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1861 through 1894.
